Biking at St. Augustine

A Hub along the St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop

Biking is a pleasant way to visit St. Augustine and its historic neighborhoods and sites. Many bike shops and racks lend to a bike-friendly city. The Bridge of Lions provides a route to Anastasia State Park. The St. Augustine area is along the East Coast Greenway (Maine to Key West), and part of the growing St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop (260-miles), new biking opportunities will be presented as these projects progress. (Detailed map and photos below.)

Biking at St. Augustine

Historic St. Augustine

The narrow streets and limited parking make St. Augustine popular for bicycling but also for pedestrians. Streets in the historic center are closed to cars but can be full of pedestrians, so use good biking etiquette or walk when crowded.

Bridge of Lions to St. Augustine Beach

Ride across the Bridge of Lions and follow A1A onto Anastasia Island to Anastasia State Park - the bridge is marked by sharrows, or bicycles are allowed on the sidewalk (yield to pedestrians). At the park are over 4 miles of beach - we had not realized what a surprisingly pleasant ride the beach at the park is (at low tide!) - and park roads are available for biking. This section is part of both the St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop and East Coast Greenway.

Mickler Road Path

From St. Augustine Beach at the intersection at A1A Beach Blvd. proceed west on Pope Road 3/10 mile (passing the YMCA) to Mickler Road. Mickler Road Path runs south about 1.5 mile between the beach and A1A to A St., with an extension along 5th Ave. to F St. It's part of both the East Coast Greenway and St. Johns River-to-Sea Loop.

Nearby Places of Interest

St. Augustine Lighthouse

St . Augustine Lighthouse was built 1871-74, and the Keeper's House in 1876. Climb 219 steps up to the top. Located at the northern end of Anastasia Island, the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum is a private, non-profit organization offering educational programs and tours (including the popular Dark of the Moon ghost tour), and conducting marine archaeological programs. The organization keeps the light burning as a private navigational aid. Fee applies.
