Cypress Creek Greenway... South Florida

Paved Bike Trail from Everglades to Atlantic Ocean

The Cypress Creek Greenway connects from the edge of the Everglades at Tamarac to the Atlantic Ocean beachside at Pompano Beach. There are two distinct sections: the western section runs along the Cypress Creek Canal about 7 miles on a paved bike path, while the eastern section follows a mostly roadside route on sidewalks. Virtually no shade, so plan accordingly. Cypress Creek Greenway is part of Broward County's Greenways system. (Map link and photos below.)

Biking on Cypress Creek Greenway

Tephford Park to Lyons Road

From Tephford Park (at SR 869 in Tamarac) the paved Greenway runs about 7 miles between the Cypress Creek Canal (Stranahan River) and a powerline to Lyons Road in Coconut Creek. The first section at the western end through Tephford Park includes 3 road crossings. Tephford Park and Tamarac Veterans Park offer parking, restrooms, picnic tables, playground, boat ramp, and a dog park. After crossing N. University Avenue, the trail continues along the canal with two more road crossings. Past Rock Island Road, the powerline turns south and the trail continues along the canal abutting residential areas.

Lyons Road to Pompano Beach

Where the trail meets Lyons Road, a sidewalk runs roadside about 1/10 mile to Fern Forest Nature Center (parking, restroom, nature trail, picnic). The trail then continues along Lyons Road and follows a mostly roadside route another 10 miles to Pompano Beach. We drove along this section to check it out, our observations: (1) it's not a true trail but rather varied-width sidewalks, plus bike lanes and some sharrows, and many road crossings; (2) mostly not along the canal, and (3) not much "greenway" except for one section near Herb Skolnick Community Center. The route winds along several roads (see map), signs pointing the direction at turns are very helpful.
