Palatka Area Trails

Palatka, a designated Florida Trail Town, serves as a hub connecting the Palatka to St. Augustine State Trail, Palatka Urban Trail, and Palatka to Lake Butler State Trails - plus the bonus of Ravine Gardens rim trail - for over 100 miles of biking when fully completed. The Palatka to St. Augustine State Trail also is part of the 260-mile St. Johns River to Sea Loop. (Detailed map and photos below.)

Palatka to Lake Butler State Trail - Located on an old Norfolk-Southern Railroad right-of-way, two segments of the planned 47 mile trail are completed (paved): 4 miles at Lake Butler, and 19 miles from Keystone Heights to Palatka. From the Roberts Lane trailhead, a connector will extend to the Palatka to St. Augustine State Trail via the Palatka Urban Trail - ultimately creating a 100 mile bike route. Keystone Heights to Florahome - The main trailhead is at Twin Lakes Park in Keystone, other trail parking along the street in Keystone Heights, in Grandin, in Florahome, and on Roberts Lane in Palatka. The trail between Keystone Heights and Palatka runs largely along Highway 100 but with a wide buffer.


Etoniah Creek State Park - The trail runs through forest at the State Park. Park roads are also bikeable.


Palatka to St. Augustine State Trail - Easy to ride, wide and straight trail through forest land and past farms. An extension from Vermont Heights to St. Augustine is in the planning stages. The trail largely follows SR207, along the roadside in part but with a wide buffer. Other sections are away from the road, shady and scenic. Parking available at Vermont Heights, Armstong, Hastings, Elkton and East Palatka (See map). Continuing over the St. Johns River Bridge at Palatka is a link to the Palatka Urban Trail which serves as a connector to the Palatka to Lake Butler State Trail - eventually, a 100 mile biking route. Vermont Heights to Spuds - From the parking at Vermont Ave., south to SR 207 trailhead, through Elkton, over Mocassin Branch bridge to Spuds (founded as a potato farming community, as you may have guessed).


Hastings to East Palatka - Along the section starting at Merryfield Lane, the first three miles run alongside SR 207 through an agricultural area  before turning away from the road. The trail winds past farms and through residential and shopping areas, before arriving back at SR 207 and ending at the St. Johns River Bridge.


Palatka - Ravine Gardens State Park - If you're in the area this is a pleasant attraction in Palatka, the rim loop road is popular for bicycling and walking.(Due to erosion issues, the loop has been closed to vehicle traffic until further notice.) The 120-foot deep ravine was created by water from the St. Johns River, the gardens were added by the WPA in the 1930's. (Updated: Oct 2018)

Palatka Urban Trail - Serves as a connector between the Palatka to St. Augustine and Palatka to Lake Butler State Trails. Portions are on bike paths, other sections run on bike lanes along the roadway. From the eastern end, cross the St. Johns River Bridge to the Palatka to St. Augustine State Trail. The western end is in a commercial area just east of US 17. This is not currently recommended for recreational bikers. (Reported: March 2018)
