Krome Path... Southeast Florida

Miami-Dade Bike Trail, Route K

As part of the Krome Avenue expansion from 2 to 4 lanes, a dedicated multi-use bike trail has been added, providing a safe north-south route for bikers and walkers. Starting in Homestead at SW 296th street, the path runs 18.5 miles north along Krome Ave. (SR 997) to SW 8th St. (US 41/Tamiami Trail). While not a recreational biking destination (all roadside, little variety), the north section is popular with road bikers, with good lighting that makes cool night rides possible. This is a good example for transportation planners; adding safe, dedicated bike and pedestrian pathways to road improvement projects. (Map link and photos below.)

Biking on Krome Path... Comments and Photos

An easy ride, but all roadside, with little to no shade. We saw trees and landscaping being added. In most spots, this paved 10' wide path is comfortably separated from the roadway by a wide, grassy median. It runs mostly past farmland, with some businesses and nurseries along the way (most in the southern section). No formal trailheads, some downtown Homestead parking. Dense development to the east is buffered by farmland, we hope it remains. Everglades National Park is to the west. To the north, the path nears unpaved canal trails along SR 997 and US 41.

Here we visit from South to North

SW 296th St. to SW 136th St. (10 miles)

The path starts at the northern end of old downtown Homestead at SW 196th St., and runs north on the west side of Krome Avenue (SR 997). Watch for driveways and crossroads in this section, as it passes several commercial areas and nurseries in addition to the farmlands.

Note: South of SW 296th St. through Homestead are sidewalk and bike lanes.

SW 136th St. to US 41 (8.5 miles)

At SW 136th St., the path crosses to the east side of Krome Avenue - it's a busy road, use the crossing signal. We've seen many road bikers using this northern section of the Krome Path - probably because it's flat and straight with just one road crossing (Kendall Drive). Approaching US 41, the path runs past a water preservation area - a pleasant section. Tall street lights make cooler night biking possible.
