Florida Eco-biking... Dixie Mainline Trail

Dixie Mainline Trail, part of the Lower Suwanee National Wildlife Refuge, runs nine miles at Florida's Big Bend, paralleling the coastline between Horseshoe Beach and Suwannee. Not exactly a bike trail, but a bike route on an old light logging railbed - this remote road now is open to cars, bikes and pedestrians. Auto traffic is light with slow speed limits so suitable for biking if you want to view mostly natural, untouched habitat up close. Pick up an interpretative guide at the kiosks at the entrances (or download it below). (Detailed map and photos below.)

DIXIE MAINLINE TRAIL... Comments and Photos

The road can be flooded and impassable on occasion. We do not recommended visiting in the summer due to insects and voracious flies, nor in October-November during hunting season.

Dixie Mainline Trail

Some of the best views are from the bridges over the tidal creeks - cypress swamps, pine forest, hardwood hammock, marsh islands and tidal creeks. The diverse habitat includes various plants and wildlife - alligators, turtles, herons, egrets, ibis, owls, and small mammals. At Shired Creek Bridge and Johnson Creek Bridge it's possible to launch a kayak or canoe from the road. There are also accesses to hiking trails.

Shired Island

One of several stops along the Big Bend Saltwater Paddling Trail, Shired Island is a nearby point of interest (follow CR 357 south from Dixie Mainline Road). Located on the Gulf of Mexico, there's a campground, boat launch, fishing pier, and (welcome) restrooms.
